Interesting facts about China, the Chinese culture and business in China.

EWD's China office is located in Ningbo. Most people will not be familiar with Ningbo, but you will be surprised to know that Ningbo's Zhoushan harbor is actually the second biggest sea freight harbor in the world considering the total reported volume in tonnes. Shanghai has the number 1 harbor for the last few years.

The sub-provincial city of Ningbo has a total of 7.5 million citizens.

"China" in Chinese characters is spelled: 中国  Zhōng-Guó. Literally translated as 'Central-Country'. On a Chinese worldmap you will find China in the middle, the most important and central country in the world.

China has the second largest economy in the world. The United States are currently still ranked number 1. Expectations are that China will have the biggest economy by the year 2030. Meanwhile it is known to be the fastest growing economy in the world, with growing percentages of on average 10% annually for the past 30 years. China is also the biggest exporter of commercial goods.

China has over 1.7 billion mobile phone users. This number keeps on growing year by year.

In the city of Chongqing a special 'walking lane' for mobile phone users is built, this was created to avoid people from running into obstacles, other people, animals or lampposts.

China has more than 160 cities with a population over one million citizens.

On top of the list are : Shangha (22 million), Beijing (19 million). Several other mega cities are Guangzhou (11 million), Shenzhen (10 million), Tianjin (11 million), Chongqing (9 million), Wuhan (10 million) and Chengdu (8 million).

China is almost as big as the USA, but it only has one timezone! The Beijing Standard time is the only Chinese timezone. 

Considering its size, China should actually have multiple timezones but in 1949 Chairman Mao decided that only one timezone should be used to create a unified nation. This means that in some parts of China the sun will not rise until 10 AM in the morning.

The export of Dutch beer to China has exploded massively. In 2009 the total value was estimated at a mere 1.9 million US Dollars, the total value of export has doubled anually ever since. Last year the export has tripled to a staggering total of 66 million dollars. 

Heineken has recently set up their own brewery in China.

The use of internet has risen to 618 million 'netizens' over the past few years. 81% of these netizens access the internet via their (smart)phone. The numbers are huge, but the internetpenetration nation wide is only at 45,8% eventhough the total population counts 1.3 billion people and the economy is still growing.

It is safe to say that the growth of Chinese internet use is still on the rise, it gives great potential to reach a big audience using the internet.

Almost 1 quarter of the total goods that come through the Rotterdam harbor is coming from China. The total amount of containers with Chinese origin has increased by 9% in the year 2014. Even with the stabilizing Chinese economic growth this number is expected to keep rising throughout the year 2015.

'10 percent more commercial goods in Chinese containers'

54 million tons of goods were unloaded in the Rotterdam harbour last year. Almost a quarter of these goods is being shipped to Rotterdam from Chinese cities. In weight, this means an increase of 10 % compared to a year before. After China; Singapore and the United States are the most important countries for supplying goods and containers. These two countries combined ship over 6 million tonnes.

120 million Chinese people are going abroad for holidays this year. Together they will spend over 160 billion dollars during their trips. These numbers are recordbreaking in the already dazzling growing Chinese tourism field; these records are estimated to be broken many times over the next few years.

One quarter of all goods imported from China consists of machinery and appliances. Second and third on the list are chemical components and textile. About 7% of the containers holds food, particularly fish, fruit and vegetables.

In 2018 China will have more robots compared to the whole of Europe, that is exepected by the Frankfurt robotmanufactureres trade association named; International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

Within the next 3 years, more than 614.000 robots will be active in the Chinese industries. This means that the total amount of robots will triple in the coming few years. 

In the European industries the use of robots is on the rise as well, but in a much slower pace. 411.000 robots in 2014 is estimated to grow to a total of 519.000 robots in 2018, which comes down to a growth of 'only' 26%. In the year 2016 China is expected to overtake Europe when it comes to total amount of robots.
